Dinnerware with Memory: The Story Behind the Collaboration of Pebbles & Artegalata
There's something magical about a meal served on a plate that's been shaped by hand—where every curve, every glaze, carries a whisper of the past and a pulse of the present. In the heart of Budapest's District 6, tucked among elegant buildings and streets that hum with life, Pebbles Budapest is more than just a restaurant for me. It is a place where candlelight and memory meet, where Turkish fusion dishes find their soulful home—and I am incredibly proud to say it is also where my ceramics live.
My dear friend Merve, a fellow Turkish creative carving out beauty in this city, dreamt up Pebbles as a love letter to the vegetarian side of Turkish cuisine—so often overlooked, yet always deeply nourishing. She imagined it as a space that evokes the feeling of a beachside dinner under a soft light, with natural wines, laughter in the air, and plates filled with warmth: a dining experience from our childhood memories with a contemporary touch.
But she didn't want just any dinnerware.
She wanted pieces that tell a story.

The Spark of Something Beautiful
It all began with a shared dream of creating a meaningful collection—through long conversations, late-night sketches, and imagining pieces that make every meal feel like a moment of connection.
"I don't want standard plates," she told me.
And I was, like, "Let me make them to tell your story."
At Artegalata, my small studio in Budapest, our hands started getting messy with clay. We gathered the Pebbles team, and together—with our sleeves rolled up and hands dusted with clay—we designed and produced every piece. You see, these weren't just tableware items for us; they were extensions of our roots, created with love and yearning. It felt less like a commission and more like fate.

Crafting the Soul of Pebbles
Every piece I crafted for Pebbles Budapest tells a story. The plates are wide and slightly irregular, with soft, organic edges that make you want to pile them high with Pebbles' signature dishes—think Yağlama or Siyez Risotto with a quiet grace. The colourful serving plates are among my personal favourites, carrying enough character to make every bite feel alive.
I used stoneware clay for durability—because restaurant life is no joke—and glazed each piece in earthy tones that echo Pebbles' welcoming atmosphere. The glazes carry the colours of our homeland: sun-baked clay, Aegean waves, olive groves at dusk. No two pieces are ever quite the same. Each one carries subtle, intentional imperfections that whisper of handcrafted care, much like the soulful fusion dishes Pebbles serves.
Where Foods Meet Handmade Art
What makes this collaboration so special is the way our Turkish roots intertwine. Pebbles' menu is a celebration of Turkish cuisine, reimagined with a contemporary perspective, and it deserves tableware that is more than just functional. Think vegan Lahmacun reinvented with fresh herbs or Sarma kissed with local verjuice. The ceramics become quiet partners, designed to let those flavours shine.
Diners notice it, too. I've seen guests at Pebbles trace the edges of a bowl or ask about the story behind the plates or mugs. It's not just dinnerware—it's about feeling the craft, the care, and the connection.

Two Women, One Shared Dream
This collaboration is deeply personal for both of us. It is about two friends pouring their passions into something bigger. Pebbles is my dear friend's dream—a place where Turkish fusion food brings people together, where every dish feels like a memory of home with a modern twist. Artegalata is mine—where clay becomes a form of art, inspired by the patterns, colours, and stories of the Turkish Mediterranean.
Together, as two Turkish women living in Budapest, we have created something magical: a dining experience where every meal feels like a contemporary celebration of tradition, memory, and craft.
So, next time you're at Pebbles, take a moment to notice the handmade details. Trace the edges. Know that each piece was made not in a factory, but by hand, in a small studio filled with conversation and care. Know that it is part of a bigger story—one we are still writing.
Come Be Part of the Story
Curious about the magic behind the scenes? You are warmly invited to step into Artegalata Studio—either through our Instagram or website, or better yet, by joining one of our ceramic workshops. Who knows? Maybe you'll craft a piece of your own story, too.
Because food is more than just eating. Plates are more than simple dinnerware. And when heart meets craft, even the simplest meal can feel like coming home.
Lots of love,
