Kern Collective Coffee
A custom drinkware collection created for Kern Collective Coffee, rooted in Anatolian material culture, the familiarity of everyday coffee rituals and the idea of hospitality as something deeply personal.
PROJECT / 01
Designed around familiarity, memory and the ritual of sharing coffee.
The starting point for the Kern Collective Coffee collection was the cultural landscape we come from. I looked toward the colours, surfaces and everyday objects of Anatolia — earthy terracottas, deep browns, warm creams, irregular marks and patterns that feel accumulated rather than perfected. I wanted the ceramics to carry a sense of familiarity. Not nostalgia in a literal or decorative way, but the quiet comfort of objects that feel as though they already belong somewhere: something held often, placed on a table, shared between people and gradually made meaningful through use.
Coffee has a particular place in Turkish culture. We say “bir kahvenin kırk yıl hatırı vardır” — a cup of coffee leaves a memory that lasts forty years. For me, that idea became central to the collection. Drinking coffee is not only about the drink itself; it can be an act of welcome, conversation, remembrance and connection. That was especially important for Kern. I wanted the pieces to create a small sense of ease for people entering the café — including those who may recognise something of home in the colours, forms or atmosphere — while still feeling contemporary and specific to the space.
Rather than creating one identical cup repeated across the café, I developed a family of individual forms and surfaces. Terracotta, brown, cream and muted mineral tones move throughout the collection, while painted marks, layered glazes and variations in form allow each piece to retain its own character. The result is a collection intended to make the everyday act of drinking coffee feel slightly more intimate: functional objects for daily café use, but with enough irregularity, warmth and presence to remind us that the vessel itself can also become part of the experience.
